These warm sandwiches are sometimes referred to as “funeral sandwiches”. I am not a fan of that term, so we’re going to celebrate these delicious morsels as Southern Belle sandwiches!
Brown Sugar Sauce – 1 stick of butter. 2 tbsp brown sugar. 2 tbsp mustard based BBQ sauce or mustard of your choice. 3 tbsp Worcestershire sauce.
Southern Belle Rolls – 1 pack Hawaiian rolls (12). 3/4 lb sliced ham or turkey. 1/2 lb sliced swiss or provolone cheese. Poppy seeds (optional)
Brown Sugar Sauce – in a small bowl, whisk together melted butter, brown sugar, mustard/bbq sauce, and Worcestershire sauce.
Southern Belle Rolls –
Grease a baking pan and pour in enough of the brown sugar sauce to coat the pan.
Cut all 12 rolls in the middle and separate the tops from the bottoms. Line the pan with the bottom of the rolls.
Evenly lay the cheese across the bottom buns.
Evenly lay the sandwich meat across the cheese.
Put on the top buns and pour over the remaining brown sugar mixture.
Wrap tightly with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 1 hour or up to overnight.
Bake at 350*F for 15-20 minutes, or until the top of the buns are golden brown and cheese has melted.
